Blind listening tests: Stradivari versus modern violins: quick facts

In recent decades researchers have run blind listening and playing tests comparing old Italian violins, including Stradivari, with high-quality modern instruments. In several well-known studies, neither expert listeners nor the players themselves could reliably tell the old from the new, and in some tests participants even preferred a modern violin. These results challenge the assumption that a Stradivari automatically sounds better than anything made today. They do not, however, lower the prices of the great old instruments, whose value rests on rarity, history, and craftsmanship as much as on pure sound. The tests remain debated, but they have reshaped how people think about the famous Cremonese tone.
