Carlo Bergonzi, luthier of Cremona: quick facts
Carlo Bergonzi was a Cremonese maker active in the first half of the 18th century and is often ranked just behind Stradivari and Guarneri 'del Gesù' among the city's luthiers. His work shows the influence of both, combining careful construction with a strong, individual style, and he is thought to have worked closely with the Stradivari and Guarneri circles. Relatively few of his instruments survive, which makes them rare and highly sought after. Bergonzi's violins are valued for their tone and workmanship and stand as proof of the depth of talent that flourished in Cremona during its golden age of violin making.
