Francesco Ruggieri, luthier of Cremona: quick facts
Francesco Ruggieri was a 17th-century Cremonese maker, generally believed to have trained in the circle of Nicolò Amati. He was a contemporary of the young Stradivari and helped carry the Amati tradition forward. Ruggieri is particularly admired for his cellos, which are valued by professional players, as well as his violins. His work shows the refined Amati pattern before the bolder innovations of Stradivari's maturity. Because his instruments sometimes were relabelled with more famous names over the years, careful attribution matters. Ruggieri stands among the skilled makers who made Cremona the centre of the violin world in the generation before Stradivari's golden period.
