'Hellier' Stradivarius: quick facts

The 'Hellier' is an early Stradivari violin dated around 1679, named for Sir Edward Hellier, an English owner said to have bought it from the maker. It is one of a small number of Stradivari instruments decorated with inlaid ornament along the edges and back, a feature Stradivari reserved for special commissions. Such decorated instruments are rare and highly prized, both for their beauty and for what they reveal about Stradivari's range as a craftsman. As an early example, the 'Hellier' also shows the influence of the Amati tradition before Stradivari's golden-period innovations took hold.
