'Vieuxtemps' Guarneri del Gesù: quick facts

The 'Vieuxtemps' is a violin made in 1741 by Giuseppe Guarneri 'del Gesù', Stradivari's great rival among Cremonese makers. It is named after the Belgian virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps, one of its famous past owners. Although this site focuses on Stradivari, the del Gesù instruments are an essential part of the same Cremonese tradition, and the 'Vieuxtemps' is among the most renowned violins in the world, reported to have changed hands for a record sum. It is celebrated for the dark, powerful tone characteristic of del Gesù's late work.
