Antonio Stradivari's reputation as a violin maker rests heavily on a relatively brief span of his long career known as the golden period, spanning approximately 1700 to 1720. During these two decades, the Italian craftsman achieved what musicologists and dealers regard as the pinnacle of his craftsmanship. By this time, Stradivari had refined the critical elements of his design—the proportions of the body, the arching of the top and back plates, and the precise placement of the f-holes—into a mature and stable model.
